As we all know, during pregnancy the abdominal muscles undergo a great amount of stretching and your body changes completely. There is no wonder that you want to jump straight back to your pre-pregnancy body, but the bad news is that you will need time to recover and get back in shape.
After giving birth you should wait for six weeks before starting your workout program and slowly and gradually build up the intensity of training to gain back your strength and to get your body in shape. Here are some simple ways that will help you flatten your stomach after pregnancy and say goodbye to that post-baby belly!
Take it slow
First of all, let nature do its job. The average uterus is approximately the size of a thumb and during pregnancy, it stretches to the size of your baby. If you want to flatten your stomach after pregnancy, you have to wait until your uterus shrinks back to its normal size. It is important not to pressure yourself or have expectations because it will make you stressed out if you don’t meet them.
As soon as your body is ready, you can start working out to strengthen your tummy muscles while you’re taking care of your baby. You can take your baby for a walk in the stroller twice a day, every day and as soon as you are feeling more fit you can try a jogging stroller. You can also practice yoga or do some simple exercises while your baby is lying or playing on the floor next to you. Start your work out sessions with pelvic tilts and gradually build up the intensity of exercises.
Exercise while being a full-time mommy
Engaging in physical activity after pregnancy is a great way to feel better about your body. It has great psychological benefits and it has been shown that it decreases postpartum depression. You can concentrate on cardiovascular exercises since they are enjoyable and you will build up endurance slowly with starting with lower intensity.
Here is an example of a simple exercise you can do:
Lie on your back, bent your knees and put your feet flat on the floor. Lift your pelvis upwards slowly and concentrate on your breathing, inhale and lift slowly while exhaling. Make sure that your back and your shoulders are touching the floor and that you’re only moving your pelvis. You should start with 3 sets of 15 repetitions and as soon as you feel strong enough you can increase the number of sets and repetitions.
Sign up for a postnatal exercise class
If you can’t seem to start exercising or you simply don’t like working out alone, join a postnatal exercise class. Having other moms around you to encourage you along can motivate you to stick at exercise. Postnatal classes are perfect for new moms since low-impact exercises are adjusted to help them get in shape. There are also classes where you can bring your baby along and work out while playing with your child.
It is very important to alter your eating habits and eat healthily. Eat vegetables, fruit, non-fat products, and lean proteins. Don’t go on a diet because there is no need to starve yourself or skip meals (especially if you are breastfeeding!!!) Instead, make smaller portions and eat healthy snacks in between the meals. The best way to get rid of post-baby belly is to exercise and eat healthily! Keep your body hydrated and drink plenty of water throughout the day. Not only it will make you feel more energized, but it will also help your skin become more elastic.
Breastfeed your baby
If you really want to lose weight then breastfeed your baby! Moms who are breastfeeding lose weight quicker because the body burns calories to support breast milk production. Plus it will help your uterus revert back to its original size because while breastfeeding your body releases the hormone oxytocin. It is good for a baby and it is good for mom.
Opt for an alternative
It is important to realize it will not be easy. Your body was changing constantly for nine months so it will need some time to get back in shape. Some women opt for restorative plastic surgery to speed up the process, especially after several childbirths. Many moms that underwent restorative surgery say that it gave them a whole new lease on life. But before deciding to take this step, make sure to find a quality plastic surgery clinic and experienced doctors that will explain the procedure step by step.
There are no shortcuts in getting your post-baby body in shape. The fastest way is through healthy nutrition and exercise. Give your body a little time and stick to your healthy choices or opt for restorative surgery as an alternative. After all, it is your body, and you should do what you feel is right for you!
